Formosa Foundation Ambassador Program – Advocacy for Taiwan

Looking for something cool to participate in this summer? Consider applying for the Formosa Foundation Ambassador Program! Read on for Ginny Wu’s account of her experience there, and then apply here

Before my two weeks with the Ambassador Program, I had been plagued by a case of pessimism for the Taiwan cause.  Fueled by a seeming lack of concern for and awareness of the issues among those around me, I couldn’t help but feel that nobody cared.  Yes I admit, politics is not the most exciting of topics for discussion.  In fact, I never imagined that I myself would ever become interested in politics, let alone decide to take part in the American political process.  But for me, I wanted change.  I wanted progress and justice.  I wanted  misperceptions cleared and justice served, but what more — I didn’t want to feel hopeless.

Fortunately, going to Washington, DC made all the difference.  I was without a doubt intimidated at first, having little idea that I had gotten myself into ‘Congressional Bootcamp.’  I won’t lie; it is a rigorous program.  From morning seminars and afternoon treks across the city to various think tanks, to late night research and preparation sessions, the Ambassador Program intensively trains participants to develop the skills for activist work.  The culmination of the program is meeting face-to-face with Members of Congress to advocate and present the reasons for continued support for Taiwan and the U.S.-Taiwan relationship – your opportunity to make an impact.

Yes, it is daunting and perhaps even stressful… but the initial anxiety expelled and turned into enthusiasm as I found myself surrounded by a network of talented and incredible people.  I was simply amazed to learn that Taiwan has so many friends and supporters on the Hill.  In two weeks worth of time, I had heard years worth of stories from people of all paths of life.  At the end of it all, I was renewed by the passion I had felt and witnessed from others and inspired to continue the fight to advance Taiwan.  Not only do I believe that Taiwan’s presence continues to grow stronger, but I also believe that my strength and horizons as an individual has grown as well.  I took away not only the knowledge of the issues and policies surrounding Taiwan and insight on how government works, but also friendships and the great message that it really is possible for us to make a difference.  I feel empowered with my conviction reaffirmed and I can honestly say that the Formosa Foundation Ambassador Program was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had.

The voice of Taiwan may be small, but you can make it heard.  As a Taiwanese, as an American, or as a Taiwanese-American…  you can make a difference.

Applications are due on March 15.  Apply here!
